Hiking Waterfalls

HIKING AND WATERFALLS

### Closest (0–5 miles)

- **Mountain Goat Trail (Monteagle sections)**

Right in town. Multiple access points including near Mountain Outfitters, Monteagle City Hall/DuBose Center, and connections toward Sewanee or Tracy City. Paved multi-use rail-trail (easy, mostly flat). Currently ~5–6+ continuous paved miles between Sewanee–Monteagle and Monteagle–Tracy City sections (full long-term project aims for much longer). Great for walking, running, or easy biking. Family-friendly and dog-friendly.

- **South Cumberland / Fiery Gizzard Visitor Center trails (Storybook Trail / Meadow Trails)**

~3–5 miles east on US 41 toward Tracy City (visitor center at 11745 US 41). Easy short nature/educational trails (Storybook Trail is under 1 mile with interpretive boards; Meadow Trails offer short loops). Good starting point for park info, maps, and restrooms. Free day use.

### 5–10 miles

- **Grundy Forest Day Loop + Fiery Gizzard North / Sycamore Falls area (Tracy City)**

~6–8 miles. Classic moderate ~2-mile loop (can extend). Features Blue Hole Falls (~9 ft with swimming hole), Hanes Hole Falls (~10 ft), Black Canyon Cascades, and a short spur to Sycamore Falls (~12 ft with swimming hole). Rocky in places, creek-side, hemlocks, and old-growth feel. One of the best short waterfall clusters nearby. Connects into the longer Fiery Gizzard Trail.

- **Sewanee / University of the South Domain trails** (Beckwith’s Point, Caldwell Rim, Piney Point, Perimeter Trail sections, etc.)

~5–7 miles southwest. Network of easy-to-moderate trails on the Domain (some free/public access, some university-related). Beckwith’s Point is a pleasant shorter option with views. Perimeter Trail is a long (~20-mile) loop around the plateau with multiple access points and overlooks—hike sections. Scenic hardwood forest, bluffs, and views into Lost Cove.

- **Bridal Veil Falls (Sewanee area)**

~6–8 miles. Moderate ~1.5–2+ mile out-and-back (or loop options). Scenic waterfall hike; trail can be a bit hard to spot initially (look for markers off Clara Point Rd area). Popular local option.

### 10–15 miles

- **Foster Falls (Fiery Gizzard South Trailhead)**

~12–15 miles. 60-ft waterfall (one of the park’s tallest) with a deep swimming pool at the base. Easy short paved/accessible walk to the overlook (~0.4 miles RT). Moderate rocky descent (stairs + trail, suspension bridge) to the base (~1 mile RT or less). Excellent for swimming, picnicking, and rock climbing (sport routes on the cliffs). Campground nearby. Highly recommended.

- **Denny Cove**

Near Foster Falls (~similar 12–15+ miles). Moderate hike to a scenic double-cascade/seasonal waterfall plus extensive sport climbing area (hundreds of routes). Less crowded than Foster Falls on busy days. Overlook options available.

- **Rutledge Falls**

~12–15 miles (toward the Tullahoma/Coffee County side). Moderate hike (around 2+ miles options) to a pretty multi-tiered waterfall on private land that allows public daylight access. Scenic and relatively less crowded than the big park trails.

### 15–25 miles

- **Greeter Falls + Boardtree Falls (Savage Gulf West / Greeter Falls Trailhead near Altamont)**

~18–22 miles. Moderate-to-strenuous ~1.4-mile loop (plus short spurs). Features Upper Greeter Falls (~15 ft), Lower Greeter Falls (~50 ft—accessed via metal spiral staircase), and Boardtree Falls. Swimming holes (including Blue Hole spur), rock formations, and bluff ledge. One of the more dramatic short waterfall loops in the broader area. Stairs and rocky sections; not the easiest for dogs or very young kids.

- **Other Savage Gulf options (Stone Door, Laurel Falls, Savage Day Loop, etc.)**

Accessible in the 15–25 mile range depending on the exact trailhead (Altamont / Beersheba Springs / Palmer side). Stone Door is a short easy walk to a dramatic overlook and “door” formation; Laurel Falls is a short loop near the ranger station. Longer rim and gulf trails available for bigger days. Check current maps—Savage Gulf is extensive.

- **Additional nearby waterfalls/hikes worth noting in the range**

Cascade Falls, Jumpoff Falls, and various smaller cascades in the Sewanee/Jump Off/Cumberland Plateau area (roughly 10–18 miles depending on exact spot). Grundy Lakes historic area (easy loops around lakes + old coke ovens, Tracy City side). Longer Fiery Gizzard Trail sections (point-to-point options connecting North and South trailheads—strenuous, rocky, multiple waterfalls and overlooks like Raven Point; 8–13 miles one way).

### Practical notes

- **Park management**: Most of the best options are in Fiery Gizzard State Park / South Cumberland complex or on the Sewanee Domain. Day-use is generally free; backcountry camping requires permits/reservations. Register at trailheads where required. Check tnstateparks.com for alerts, maps, and conditions (trails can be rocky, rooty, and slick after rain).

- **Best seasons**: Spring for peak water flow and wildflowers; fall for colors and fewer bugs; summer for swimming holes (water is cold). Avoid after heavy rain if trails are flooded or extremely muddy.

- **Difficulty reality**: Many “moderate” trails here involve rocks, roots, stairs, and elevation changes into gorges. Sturdy footwear is essential. Foster Falls overlook and Mountain Goat Trail are among the most accessible.

- **Tips**: Start early on weekends (popular spots like Foster Falls and Greeter fill parking). Dogs are allowed on most trails (leashed). Bring water, as services are limited once on trail. For the absolute latest conditions or obscure smaller falls, AllTrails, the Friends of South Cumberland site, and the park visitor center are excellent resources

FOOD AND DINING

### Mexican

- **Paco’s Cantina & Sports Bar** (202 E Main St, Monteagle) — Right in town (~0.5–1 mile). **Local favorite** for authentic Mexican: street tacos, fajitas, quesadillas, nachos, cheese dip, Mexican street corn, and more. ### Cafe / Sandwiches / Casual Market Eats

- **Mountain Goat Market** (109 Main St, Monteagle) — Very close and one of the most popular local spots. Excellent sandwiches (Ragin’ Cajun is a standout), pizzas, salads, wraps, espresso bar, and homemade desserts. Quirky “Killer Eats. Eclectic Finds” vibe with a gift shop feel. ### American / Southern Comfort / BBQ

- **Depot Cafe** (403 W Main St, Monteagle) — Close-in breakfast and lunch spot. Open mornings into early afternoon.

- **Jim Oliver’s Smoke House / Patio Grill** (West Main St area near I-24, Monteagle) — Classic Southern BBQ and comfort food landmark (smoked meats, fried chicken, sides, etc.). The original restaurant building burned years ago, but the Patio Grill continues with food service and live music on weekends. Touristy but longstanding local institution.

### Bakery / Sweets

- **Dutch Maid Bakery & Cafe** (Tracy City, ~6 miles) — Iconic, long-running bakery (often called one of the oldest in the South). Fresh baked goods, salt bread, pastries, sandwiches, and more. Worth the short drive if you’re near Fiery Gizzard or just craving sweets.

**Quick tips**: Monteagle’s best independent spots cluster tightly along Main Street/Dixie Lee, so many are an easy walk or very short drive from Lindsay Ave. Sewanee and Tracy City add variety within 10 minutes. Hours fluctuate (especially for smaller places), so check current times or call. Paco’s stands out as the requested local favorite for Mexican + sports bar vibes, while Mountain Goat Market and Depot Cafe are other frequent local go-tos for everyday casual meals. Enjoy your meals on the mountain!
